Workshop Description

The explosive development of agentic systems in design has led to an abundance of production, first in visual media and now in computational logic and modeling as well. This shifts the value proposition of design from the act of production to the act of curation, while at the same time raising unsolved issues of authorship, regression to the mean, and what it means to do thorough work.

In this workshop, we will engage with a cutting edge ai system for computational design, Raven, to explore the current state and future evolution of computational design practise. We will learn to engage with and critically examine AI generated output, and learn how to leverage the endless possibilities in service of design projects while protecting the authorship control and liabilities of the design profession.

Workshop Schedule

Day 1 – Foundations of Procedural Robot Control

Time: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (w/ 1-hour break) Morning

  • Welcome, getting to know each other, exchanging stories and experience around ai in design.
  • Intro Lecture on LLMs for Design Scripting, origins and concept (MORITZ RIETSCHEL) and basics of reinforcement learning and language modeling.
  • Introduction to Rhino/Grashopper interface and concept relevant for computational design, a well as the plugin ecosystem and world of connected CAD software.
  • Installation, setup and basics of getting started with Raven. Now that we understand the concepts, lets explore them in real work.

Afternoon

  • Best practises, advanced workflows using image based prompting, script reuse and collaboration.
  • Exploring beyond geometry: analysis, simulation and other advanced workflows that provide real time feedback to evaluate generated geometry and enable a fly wheel effect to designing more efficient and functional geometries with AI.

Total Workshop Time: ~8 hours

  • Audience: Students, researchers, and professionals in architecture, design, and digital fabrication
  • Skill Level: Intermediate. Prior knowledge of Rhino/Grasshopper is helpful but not required
  • Group Size: ~25 participants
  • Hardware: Mac or Windows and the latest Rhino 8
